A teenage boy had worked hard this summer. He saved up enough money to purchase the basketball that he had wanted. A few weeks later he was playing with some friends at the local community center. He turned his back for a minute and his beloved basketball was gone. This boys mother posted on social media asking the community to keep an eye out for it since he was devastated and she did not have the funds to replace it.
Immediately there was an outpouring of love from their local community. Multiple people offered to chip in and buy this boy a new basketball. Amber is a community member and she stated, “I’ll buy him a ball to replace it if that’s ok with you…I want him to know there are still good people out there.”

Living in the United States and other parts of the world that are not directly affected by the Syrian Refugees its easy to turn a blind eye. I hope to shed a little bit of light on what is happening over there. An estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of civil war in March 2011, taking refuge in neighboring countries or within Syria itself. Since the Syrian civil war began, 320,000 people have been killed, including nearly 12,000 children. About 1.5 million people have been wounded or permanently disabled (worldvision.org). This one belief guides us and inspires us to grant wishes that change the lives of the kids we serve.”

“At Puppies Behind Bars, we believe that dogs can change lives. Our dogs can change the lives of prison inmates who have built walls around their emotions in order to survive in prison. Our dogs can change the lives of law enforcement agents who are looking for hidden explosives and know that the noses on their canine companions are the surest ways to find something, and they can change the lives of wounded war veterans for whom, in many cases, war has come to feel normal while being home has felt very scary.” Continue reading “Puppies Behind Bars”
On March 18, 2011 Cari gave birth to a sweet baby boy and named him Jake. He was 15 oz. at birth (13 oz. at his smallest weight) and 9 1/2 inches long. Cari was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome (HELLP Syndrome is life-threatening pregnancy complication usually considered to be a variant of preeclampsia) and Jake was taken by emergency C-section to save her life. Cari was put in a temporary coma to save her liver and kidneys as well as other organs. The doctors told Cari and her husband that they would not see Jake alive because he wouldn’t even live an hour. But hours turned into days and days turned into months. Jake lived in the UVRMC NICU for 7 months (with the exception of a 6 week stay at Primary Childrens NICU). Continue reading “Cari”
