One night my family and I decided to go to In N Out for dinner. When we arrived there was a teenager sitting outside. As we approached he asked if we could spare a dollar to buy a hamburger. We told him we only had a card on us but if he followed us inside we would be happy to buy him dinner. When our food was ready we asked if he wanted to join us for dinner. He smiled and said he would love to.
During our dinner conversation we found out his name was Steven and he was 17 years old. A few weeks earlier he had gotten into a fight with his Dad. Since then, he had been living on the streets and friends couches. I asked him what his plans were and he replied that he wanted to hitch hike to Oregon where a family member lived. I then asked if he was in any harm at his parents house. He responded that he was not but he didn’t get along with his dad. Throughout dinner we came up with a plan for him to return home and save money his senior year of high school so that he could move out the following year. I have no idea if he actually went home or not. I still think about him often and I hope and pray he is safe.
