My sister, Jess (you can read her story here), is currently battling brain cancer. Before finding out about her cancer she loved getting eyelash extensions. She had just gotten her eyelashes done a few days before having her seizure and undergoing brain surgery. In order to operate they had to shave her head. It helped her to feel feminine with a shaved head to have her eyelashes done. Once she started chemotherapy her natural eyelashes started falling out which left nothing for the eyelash extensions to adhere to. Thrive Causemetics is a company that is thinking outside of the box in order to help cancer patients feel beautiful.
Thrive Causemetics is Beauty with a Purpose: For every product purchased, one is donated to a woman going through cancer treatment. Karissa Bodnar is the founder of Thrive Causemetics but before starting this company she was involved with an organization called “Look Good, Feel Better” which benefits women with cancer. These women attend free beauty workshops where they are provided complimentary cosmetics from brands around the globe.
“Look Good, Feel Better was able to provide products ranging from eyeliner to foundation, but the #1 question from women attending the classes was ‘What about eyelashes? I can’t seem to find faux eyelashes that work because I’ve lost my natural lashes that keep faux lashes on.’
I heard this feedback for several years, but was unable to find a solution for these incredible women and I wanted to give them more.
After my friend Kristy passed away from cancer in 2013, I knew I had to do something to honor her life – I developed faux lashes that work for women who’ve lost their own. Through our proprietary design, we were able to develop a solution that delivers flawless application whether women have lashes or not.”
The company name was inspired by Robin Roberts from Good Morning America. “While watching Good Morning America one October morning during their ‘GMA Goes Pink’ initiative, I heard Robin say, ‘these women are not just survivors, they are Thrivers.’ From that moment on, I knew our company would be called Thrive Causemetics. ”
For every product purchased, they donate one to a Thriver going through cancer treatment in collaboration with their giving partners. Their products are named after Thrivers who inspire them. They do more than just fight to survive, they thrive.
